Baijnath History

Baijnath is a beautiful town, named after the ancient Baijanth temple of Shiva. Many devotees come to this temple to pray to the almighty lord Shiva and get his blessings. The architecture and sculpture of the temple is magnificent, which lures many experts and researchers from around the globe.

History – According to the Hindu scripture, Ravana sacrificed his heads to please the almighty during a Havana (A holy Hindu ritual) in Kailash. After seeing the extraordinary dedication and deed of Ravana, the Lord Shiva granted him immortality and invincibility. Ravana also requested the Lord Shiva to go along with him to his lands. The Lord Shiva consented to Ravana’s request by converting himself into a Shivling. However, the Lord Shiva warned him that he cannot place the Shivling on the ground as he won’t be able to pick it again. After attaining the blessings of the Lord Shiva, Ravana started his journey towards the Lanka. While returning to his land, Ravana felt the urgency of nature’s call so he handed over the Shivling to a shepherd. The shepherd found the Shivling heavy and placed it on the ground thus establishing it in the Kiragrama, today it is known as Baijnath.
