History- The legends regard this holy place as a Maha Shakti Peetham. They believe that when Sati Devi sacrificed herself in “Yagna”, Lord Shiva became angry and started “Taandav Nritya”. The Taandav Nritya is believed to the source of creation, preservation and dissolution of the universe. Thus, when Lord Shiva started “Taandav Nritya”, the god and goddess of heaven became scared of the end of the universe. To calm down the anger of Lord Shiva, the Lord Vishnu used his “Chakra” to dismember Sati Devi’s corpse. The dismembered tongue of Sati Devi fell here and it became one of the fifty-one Shakti Peeths.
